Go out and RECYCLE, Warhawks!

Did you know that recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours? What are YOU doing to recycle and reduce waste?

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater will be participating in RecycleMania this year, hoping to increase awareness of recycling and waste reduction on campus. Residence hall buildings and others on the UW-Whitewater campus will be competiting against 518 school nationwide to:

  • Collect the largest amount of recyclables
  • The least amount of trash
  • Have the highest recycling rate
For eight weeks, participating school will report their recycling and trash data—and will then be ranked according to their results. UW-Whitewater is in the Competition Division, meaning that our official rankings and results could make us eligibile to win prizes!

So, are you ready to rally?! Each week results and rankings will be posted online, and we will rally our campus community to reduce and recycle more. Shout out to John’s Disposal for providing total recycling and trash weights! Go out and RECYCLE, Warhawks! For weekly updates, follow our Facebook and Twitter pages.

UW-Whitewater has pledged to pursue waste minimization methods such as:
  • Promoting inter-office reusable envelopes for campus mail and
  • Replacing paper documents with online alternatives wherever possible (e.g. telephone directories, course catalogs, room selection, bill payment, grade distribution, etc.)
  • Offering discounts or other incentives for using reusable mugs in campus dining operations
  • Creating active program to educate employee and students about waste minimization practices

Project: Clean Plate--Keeping hunger in mind.

What are you doing to stop food waste? Are you keeping hunger in mind?

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, 854 million people do not have enough to eat. To put that into perspective, that number is more than the populations of the United States, Canada and the European Union. Consequently, hunger and poverty claim 25,000 lives every day.

UW-W Dining Services will combat the global food waste problem by promoting Project: Clean Plate, a program that provides awareness to international hunger and helps students focus globally and act locally to combat hunger, reduce waste, save energy and initiate real change. It is designed to reduce overall food waste in all-you-can-eat campus dining operation.

Project: Clean Plate will be implemented at Esker Dining Hall the week of Jan. 30, 2012. Esker Dining Hall will keep track of the food waste amount each week. The goal will be to reduce the waste amount from week to week. Results will be tracked and posted on UW-W Dining Services’ Facebook page, Twitter page and on their website.

What can YOU do to combat hunger and poverty? Take a proactive approach within our campus community with the following:

  • Exercise portion control:
    • There are large and small soup bowls—please use the one that matches your appetite.
    • Not so hungry? Just take half of a sandwich.
    • Did you know that you can fix half of a waffle?
  • Not sure about a menu item? Try a sample first!
  • Eat with your stomach, not your eyes! You can always go back for more.
  • For added taste, use condiments.
  • Wait to get dessert until you have finished.
Hunger and poverty affects people worldwide, but we need to realize that we can help people in our own community! At the end of Project: Clean Plate, UW-W Dining Services will make a donation to the Whitewater Food Pantry to combat hunger and support the community.

BALANCED U: January

Thankfully, finals are done and over with! But, that doesn't mean that all the stress goes away. Balancing you meals will help balance everything else too!

January's Balanced U* focus is: 'Reduce stress & feel good'.  There are certain foods that contain nutrients scientifically known to help stabilize hormone levels, and maintain appropriate chemical composition in the brain. It is the chemical reactions in the brain that help manage stress and anxiety or promote feelings of well-being.

Here are some foods that will help you reduce stress and feel good!
  • Grains: whole wheat pasta and bread, popcorn, brown rice and quinoa.
  • Fruits: cherries, grapefruit, plums, peaches, strawberries, blueberries, apples, pears, bananas, mangoes and oranges.
