Celebrate National Seafood Month

Get out there are try something new this month! Be brave!

October is National Seafood Month, and UW-W Dining Services will be serving up seafood specials during the month of October!

National Seafood Month has been celebrated in the month of October for many years. Did you know that the seafood industry contributes more than $60 billion dollars to the United States economy each year? Are you part of that figure? You should be! It is recommended that you should eat at least two servings of seafood each week. 

Not up on your history? Good thing we are: The National Fisheries Institute launched National Seafood Month in the 1940s as a week-long event to promote seafood. It evolved in the late 1950s into a promotional event spanning all of October. October initially was chosen because it was a slow period for seafood sales. (Read more here)
We also found some more interesting facts about seafood consumption:

  • Americans consumed 4.9 billion pounds of seafood in 2007—an average of 16.3 pounds of seafood per person.
  • The National Fisheries Institute expects worldwide per capita consumption of seafood to
  • Seventy-five percent of Americans say they eat seafood once a month, nearly half eat seafood once a week.
