Diversity Lunch, featuring Jamie Brace

UW-W Dining Services hosted a Diversity Lunch to celebrate Native American Heritage Awareness MonthJamie Brace spoke about her Native American heritage, while guests ate a meal specially prepared for the event.

Brace also spoke about her experience with domestic violence and her success as a nationally touring and award-winning musician. Guests were literally consumed by the music she preformed on stage, "It was like the music consumed me...you start swaying and don't even know you are doing it," said one UW-Whitewater student.

Brace isn't a motivational speaker, and her appearance at UW-Whitewater was one of the first times that she had spoken at a college or university. "All of us have a passion deep down inside...there's a real purpose as to why you're here on Earth, and there are certain things that you have to let happen," said Brace.

Ann Wick, marketing director at UW-W Dining Services, believed that this event was so successful because it offered guests more than a lunch and performance, "There were so many facets to it. People are more than one-dimensional, and ultimately that's what we want people to come away with when they attend one of these programs."

It was apparent that Brace had moved many of the audience members with her talk about domestic violence and passion. "Yeah, I've gone through some dark things, but everyone has. Turn it into something positive," said Brace.

Brace is a Native American from the Lac Courte Oreilles band of the Ojibwe Tribe.
