BALANCED U: January

Thankfully, finals are done and over with! But, that doesn't mean that all the stress goes away. Balancing you meals will help balance everything else too!

January's Balanced U* focus is: 'Reduce stress & feel good'.  There are certain foods that contain nutrients scientifically known to help stabilize hormone levels, and maintain appropriate chemical composition in the brain. It is the chemical reactions in the brain that help manage stress and anxiety or promote feelings of well-being.

Here are some foods that will help you reduce stress and feel good!
  • Grains: whole wheat pasta and bread, popcorn, brown rice and quinoa.
  • Fruits: cherries, grapefruit, plums, peaches, strawberries, blueberries, apples, pears, bananas, mangoes and oranges.
  • Vegetables: sweet potatoes, peas, corn, leafy greens, carrots, tomatoes and other non-starchy vegetables, spinach, green beans and broccoli.
  • Proteins: salmon, mackerel, low fat milk, low fat yogurt, seafood, fish, lean pork, beans of any kind, turkey, soy products, nuts and nut butters.
Prairie Street and Drumlin will be featuring various items from the above lists throughout the month of January!

P. Street: navel oranges, apples, bananas, whole wheat buns

Drumlin: grapefruit wedges, orange wedges (at salad bar)

*Balanced U is a program designed to provide a variety of healthy food. This program also focuses on educating students to moderate and balance their meals.
