Go out and RECYCLE, Warhawks!

Did you know that recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours? What are YOU doing to recycle and reduce waste?

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater will be participating in RecycleMania this year, hoping to increase awareness of recycling and waste reduction on campus. Residence hall buildings and others on the UW-Whitewater campus will be competiting against 518 school nationwide to:

  • Collect the largest amount of recyclables
  • The least amount of trash
  • Have the highest recycling rate
For eight weeks, participating school will report their recycling and trash data—and will then be ranked according to their results. UW-Whitewater is in the Competition Division, meaning that our official rankings and results could make us eligibile to win prizes!

So, are you ready to rally?! Each week results and rankings will be posted online, and we will rally our campus community to reduce and recycle more. Shout out to John’s Disposal for providing total recycling and trash weights! Go out and RECYCLE, Warhawks! For weekly updates, follow our Facebook and Twitter pages.

UW-Whitewater has pledged to pursue waste minimization methods such as:
  • Promoting inter-office reusable envelopes for campus mail and
  • Replacing paper documents with online alternatives wherever possible (e.g. telephone directories, course catalogs, room selection, bill payment, grade distribution, etc.)
  • Offering discounts or other incentives for using reusable mugs in campus dining operations
  • Creating active program to educate employee and students about waste minimization practices
