Breaking Stereotypes, Building Traditions.

Ready for a taste of the world?

Past International Dinner attendees have walked away from this experience with a newfound appreciation for the beauty of diversity. This year's dinner will be no different.

Students, faculty and staff members at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater are invited to join the Whitewater community in celebrating cultures from around the world. This year's International Dinner will be held on Friday, March 2 in the Hamilton Room of the James R. Connor University Center.

International students from UW-Whitewater submitted recipes for the menu, which will feature 13 flavorful dishes from various cultures. UW-W Dining Services will be preparing the following dishes for this year's International Dinner:
  • Ceviche (Seafood Soup) - Peru, Ecuador
  • Tapa (Appetizer) - Spain
  • Cucumber Salad - Thailand
  • Kabsa (Chicken and Rice) - Saudi Arabia
  • African Beef Spinach Pie - Cameroon
  • Salmon - Sweden
  • Stir-Fried Homestyle Egg and Tomato - China
  • Chicken Curry - Jamaica
  • Sesame Green Beans - Japan
  • Fried Plantain - The World
  • Flan (Custard) - Venezuela
  • Tea Cake - Russia
Jessica Harmatys, student services specialist in the Center for Global Education, said the purpose of the dinner is for people to be exposed to various cultural foods and traditions in order to learn more about the world.

"Many students at UW-Whitewater are unable to study abroad for various reasons. This event is where our international students get to shine and share their culture and traditions with the campus and community," Harmatys said.

Entertainment including skits, singing, dancing and live music will add to the event's flavorful experience. Nima Salami, a business student from Iran, will perform during dinner, followed by entertainment provided by the International Student Association.

Harmatys believes the dinner will open eyes and lead to an appreciation of diversity on campus.

"I hope people will walk away challenged to change stereotypes that they've had about the world. I also hope they will leave with a newfound appreciation for the beauty of diversity that our international students bring to campus," Harmatys said.

Those wishing to attend the International Dinner are encouraged to purchased tickets as soon as possible. Ticket cost is $19 for the public, $11 for students and children. Tickets are available for purchase at the Center of the Arts Ticket Center, tickets.uww.edu, or call 262-472-2222. Tickets will not be sold at the door this year.

I took a LEAP...will you?

At the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, faculty and staff members strive to improve learning and teaching—aligned with the Liberal Education and America’s Promise program. LEAP aims to provide an education that emphasizes skills in critical thinking, writing, speaking and understanding the world at large.

As a first-generation student, I didn’t know what to expect when I was accepted to UW-Whitewater. Throughout my four years as a student on campus, I have received a well-rounded education and participated in internships that have prepared me for the real world.

Preparation for work after graduation began during my first university-sponsored internship experience with UW-W Dining Services. This internship laid out the framework for an educational experience, including expectations, goal-setting and evaluation.

My supervisor developed elevated expectations for me, similar to those of hiring managers in the job market I wanted to pursue—she went above and beyond to make sure I achieved what I had set out to accomplish. She got to know me on a personal level. My supervisor learned my skills and background to better provide and guide the learning experience. Near graduation, she also provided possible career path options, tailored to my interests.

UW-W Dining Services focused on my academic plan, and provided me with an opportunity and the tools needed to be successful. I was encouraged to explore new ideas, share my vision and implement strategies. At UW-W Dining Services, I shared a purpose of continuous improvement with the company in a professional development environment.

Responsibility was one of the main skills I learned during my internship with UW-W Dining Services. My supervisor was there to guide me through diverse learning situations, but I was responsible for getting the most out of the internship experience. In addition, UW-W Dining Services helped me understand the role I play within the organization. I may not have the highest-ranking official title in the organization, but I know how my influence has grown since the start. I have developed a voice, and am heard throughout the organization.

As I near graduation, another student will fill my position for the upcoming semester. I will be given the opportunity to mentor this student, by providing support and transition assistance for them. In this leadership/mentor role, I will be able to share the knowledge that I learned through the same experience that they are about to take on.

To finish, there are numerous reasons why I would recommend an experience like mine to students. In particular, UW-W Dining Services was able to take what I had learned in the classroom, and transform that into real-world job experience. I developed those communication, problem-solving and critical thinking skills that future employers are looking for—that alone makes this experience invaluable.

--Rachel Appner

Officially, 37 days.

Can you make it that long? Only 37 more days until classes end and Spring Break starts!

Eating right can help you look your best, for Spring Break and beyond! Be proud to look good! Look and feel your best with these healthy food and drink tips from Balanced U:
  1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate:
    • Toxins cause infections, can lead to cancer, and dull the surfaces of your body. Water can help flush those toxins out of your body, and help you look great!
  2. Get 5-9 daily:
    • Eat MORE fruit and veggies! This factor cannot be stressed enough. Fruits and veggies provide a wide variety of health benefits, both short and long term.
  3. Pump some iron! (and zinc)
    • Take care of your body by consuming more lean beef or poultry. If you're vegetarian, you can still get these nutrients from lentils, whole grains and tofu.
BONUS TIP: If you plan to be in the sun over Spring Break, plan to work these foods into your diet:
  • Halibut
  • Whole Wheat
  • Cantaloupe
  • Spinach
